World News B February 8th, 2008: Final class!

1.I learned that I have a lot of things which I don’t know. And I thought I have to know about them. Most interesting thing was what there are many different culture all over the world. Several countries have several culture. For example, we have “star festival”, but western countries don’t. and Japan and UK have different custom on Christmas day. I enjoyed know. I enjoyed know these things on the internet through this semester.

I found this article. It says that the number of people who complained of sickness after eating frozen food products made in China. It was revealed Wednesday that 10 people in three families in Chiba and Hyogo prefectures showed symptoms of food poisoning between Dec. 28 and Jan. 22 after eating frozen gyoza dumplings imported by JT Foods Co., an affiliate of Japan Tobacco Inc., and nine were hospitalized.
When I heard this news on TV, I was shocked. Although I’ve never bought the gyoza, it’s not uncommon product. I see foreign products all over. But often I can’t make sure that where they are from. I think it’s a problem.

I read an article about a movie. The title is “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. The movie adaptation of the musical. Tim Burton direction, and Jhonny Depp plays the lead in the movie. The story is really cruel. So children under 15 years old can’t watch this movie in Japan. A journalist who wrote the article says doesn’t want to watch it because he doesn’t like horror movie. But I can watch horror movies and I like Jhonny Depp. That’s why I’ll go to the movie theater.

I relaxed in my hometown on New Year’s Day. I ate osechi and zouni which ware made by my mother. And I watched some TV program. On 2nd, I paid homage at a Saijo-inari that is a famous shrine in Okayama. I drew a fortune slip. It was kichi(good fortyne). It said I should believe myself and be actively.

Merry Christmas!

1)
The Nativity Play recreates the scene of Jesus’ birth in the stable and tells of how Mary and Joseph were visited by the Shepherds and Wise Men. The parts of Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds and the Wise Men are played by the children. In our school, the Year 3 children perform a Nativity to the whole school and to proud parents.

Caroling (singing carols in the street) is one of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars, seeking food, money, or drink, would wander the streets singing holiday songs.

A pantomime is a traditional British Christmas play. In pantomimes the male roles are often played by women and female roles by men. This makes the audience laugh more. Audience participation is an important part of a pantomime.

Mince pies small pies, usually between 2 and 3 inches in diameter (5-7.5 centimetres), filled with mincemeat (Minced fruit not meat. In the US, mincemeat is known by the more accurate name "fruitmince".) They should traditionally have a star on top, to represent the  Christmas Star which some believe led the shepherds and Magi to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
